Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) Are Coming

From 1 December 2026, Australia will move from Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) to Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) for airborne contaminants.

From 1 December 2026, Australia will move from Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) to Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) for airborne contaminants. While the change may appear to be a simple terminology update, it forms part of a broader national approach to managing exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace.

Workplace Exposure Limits are used to help determine whether workers may be exposed to unsafe levels of airborne contaminants such as dusts, fumes, gases and vapours. Industries where workers are regularly exposed to these hazards may be particularly impacted by the change.

For many businesses, this is a timely reminder to review how airborne hazards are currently being identified, monitored and controlled. Simply having controls in place is not enough, employers should be confident those controls remain effective and appropriate for the risks present.

Although the change does not take effect until December 2026, businesses should consider using the lead time to review their current approach and identify any gaps.

To prepare for the transition to Workplace Exposure Limits, employers should:

  • Review hazardous substances used within the workplace.
  • Identify tasks that may expose workers to airborne contaminants.
  • Review existing control measures and respiratory protection requirements.
  • Ensure Safety Data Sheets and hazardous chemical registers are up to date.
  • Seek advice where monitoring or exposure assessments may be required.
